Summer of Psalms: A Cushy Life

Pet bed by Peticula
Psalm 66:8-11 (KJV) O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of his praise to be heard: Which holdeth our soul in life, and suffereth not our feet to be moved. For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried. Thou broughtest us into the net; thou laidst affliction upon our loins.

While visiting my mom recently, a familiar song played on her kitchen stereo, "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden." This country love song was a hit back in 1970. It reminded me of those who preach the "Prosperity Gospel." Proponents of this movement believe that God wants you to succeed and have a prosperous life.

There is nothing in the Bible that says God owes you a cushy life. He gave us abundant life, not a comfortable one. Think of the disciples. Did they live lavish lifestyles? Not hardly. Most of them were homeless and broke. The apostles were hunted men, who were arrested and tortured many times. Most were martyred for their faith.

We are bound to suffer at some point in our lives; perhaps physically or financially, or even for our faith. This life is not meant to be soft and easy. That's how we can tell the difference between this place and Heaven.

God never promised us a rose garden, but He will walk with us--every step of the way.

Notable Quote:

"The tests of life are to make, not break us. Trouble may demolish a man's business but build up his character. The blow at the outward man may be the greatest blessing to the inner man. If God, then, puts or permits anything hard in our lives, be sure that the real peril, the real trouble, is that we shall lose if we flinch or rebel."--Maltbie Davenport Babcock
