Jumping Off The Cliff

My dad had a lot of sayings. One of my favorites was when I asked for his advice. He always said, "When you come to a cliff, the hardest part is the first step." In the last few months, I have stepped off the metaphorical cliff, and am now free falling into a writing career. Dad was right. The first step was difficult, but I am getting used to having air below my feet and it feels kinda good.

It may sound slightly sappy, but I always felt like God had a plan for my life. I just couldn't figure out what it was. One day, I confided to The Hubster that I had always had a secret desire to write stories, but felt I wasn't good enough. He said, "You already are a writer. You write your blog every Monday night, and lots of people read it." I never had thought of my blog in that way.

Most people don't know it, but The Hubster has been going through a major health battle. We have been to specialist after specialist, but no one has been able to determine the source of his pain. This has been going on for 10 months. I watch how bravely he is facing this situation, and how he is allowing God to lead. It has inspired me to be honest with myself and live an authentic life.

Toward that end, I am announcing the inaugural meeting of the Cowley County Writer's Guild at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 21 in the Ark City Public Library meeting room. Don't fool yourself into thinking that this is for professionals only; this group will be comprised of people from all walks of life who have one thing in common: books. We like to read them, we like to talk about them, we like to analyze them and we respect their authors. These folks might love poetry, play writing, science fiction, fantasy, crime stories, romance, or even non-fiction. There's also no age limit.

Please consider coming to the meeting yourself, and inviting a friend or two to come along. How many times have you said to yourself, that movie didn't end the way it should have? Or that book was really boring, why couldn't they have added this or that? We will share ideas with each other and inspire ourselves to try something new, or expand our boundaries. If enough people are interested, we could meet on the third Tuesday every month. Besides, I'm bringing snacks!

Speaking of snacks, has anyone tried the Tropical Sno stand beside Country Mart? It's that cute little blue beach shack. They serve tons of snow cones in very exotic flavors like Tiger's Blood and Blue Lagoon. I prefer to stick to the single- or double-fruit flavors. I really like the orange and the pina colada. The Hubster and I have a regular date there on Tuesdays after work.
