Time For A Rest

Exodus 20:9-10 (KJV) Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

A dear friend gave me an amazing gift--a devotional book called, "Sacred Rest" by Cheryl Wunderlich. Each night before bed, I savor two pages of hope and encouragement, centering on the need for a Sabbath.

The Scripture quotation above reminds us that rest is a commandment from God. And while we would never consider breaking God's laws like "do not murder" and "don't covet your neighbor's wife," we don't think twice about blowing right through a Sabbath day of rest.

I have a tough time with this one. It makes me feel lazy when I sit around all day, reading, calling loved ones and napping. But I have noticed how hard it is for me to get up on Monday mornings after a very busy, activity-stuffed Sunday. There's a correlation there.

What if there is a bigger message here? As Christ Followers, we must lead the way and show others how vital rest is to our well-being. The pace at which we live our lives sets us apart from others. We are to be leaders in the culture.

Contend for the faith! Take a rest!
