Why Did You Leave Your First Love?

Revelation 2:2-4 (KJV) I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

In the book of the Revelation is a letter from the Apostle John to the church at Ephesus. He warned the members that they were headed down the wrong path. "Thy first love" to John is the gospel message that is contained in the Bible. Sometimes members and even whole congregations get so involved with programs, ministries, services and outings (that are all good things), that they lose sight of the most important role of the church, to educate the members on the Word, and share the saving knowledge of Christ.

So, what are churches for? And why should we attend one?

The church is labeled by the Bible as the "body of Christ." Members are expected to follow the laws of God. A promise in the book of Matthew states "where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I in the midst of them." Accountability and fellowship with like-minded friends are great reasons to attend church.

As a member of a local, New Testament church, make sure to remember:

1. People will let you down every time. Keep your eyes on God, not others.
2. Programs are nice extras, but not vital like the meat of the Word.
3. Plant yourself where God placed you and bloom there.
